The Hugh Freeze era of Auburn Football has begun to a promising start after they defeated UMass, 59-14, on Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Following the win, Auburn only needs five more wins to become bowl-eligible and the experts at 247Sports believe they’ll reach eight or nine wins and a Gator Bowl invitation.
The potential opponent for that bowl game could be longtime rival Clemson. Clemson’s season got off to a sour start Monday when the Tigers dropped a 28-7 decision to Duke, putting them behind Florida State and North Carolina who both earned solid victories in week one.
Brad Crawford of 247Sports released his updated bowl projections and believes that Auburn and Clemson will meet again in the Gator Bowl. The potential matchup between Freeze and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney will be an exciting one as Auburn holds a 34-15-2 advantage in games against the Tigers, but Clemson has won the past four meetings.
The Gator Bowl is scheduled to take place on December 29th and while the opponent won’t be known for sure just yet, Clemson looks to be well in line to make a return to Jacksonville. Auburn will have to continue making strides throughout the season in order for that to come true, but Freeze’s first meeting with UMass helped keep their dreams alive.
If both teams stay on track, it’ll be a meeting of two great rivals at the Gator Bowl. Regardless of the outcome, it’s sure to be a memorable game for both Auburn and Clemson fans
