After watching Secret Invasion, I’m glad the strikes forced Marvel and Disney to take a break from the MCU. With production paused, Marvel seems to have the time to put out two upcoming crossover movies: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. These working titles, Apple Pie 1 and 2, just recently leaked, and might give us a hint as to the overall story we’ll see in these movies.

The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars are both set for May 2026 and May 2027, though given the ongoing strikes that seems unlikely. Until then, Marvel has plenty of other stories to tell and characters to introduce. We know Jonathan Majors will be playing the villain of the Multiverse Saga, Kang, in The Kang Dynasty. Meanwhile, rumors suggest Sony characters from the Spider-Verse will make appearances in Secret Wars.

The recently leaked working titles, Apple Pie 1 and 2, seem to be an internal joke based on Marvel lore. It has to do with Carl Sagan and his Cosmos series from the 1980s, where the famed scientist said “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” This could have to do with how Kang actually created an entire, possibly multi-reality universe . The recent Loki series is also a likely source of clues for the upcoming movies’ plotlines.

Funnily enough, Marvel always uses misleading working titles; these are sure to change along the way. Even so, the Apple Pie titles hint at a more meta explanation for why Marvel is coming up with these two crossover movies. They could be considering creating an entirely new universe, from scratch.

While the strikes are no laughing matter and their resolution is long overdue, Marvel making use of this time could mean more epic, better-planned movies in Phase 5 and Phase 6. The MCU is on a much-needed break, and as such Marvel has the opportunity to make the most of it. It seems to already have interesting story arcs underway, so let’s hope these involve groundbreaking, universe-shattering plot twists
