Recruiting has been a rollercoaster for the Texas Longhorns of late. The addition of two cornerbacks, Selman Bridges and Corian Gipson, has blown up the dream of an all-star cornerback class. Despite the recent slow-down, there are three big-time targets Texas can contest for in the coming months.
Colin Simmons, Kobe Black, and Brandon Baker are the three players that need to join the Longhorns’ 2024 class to make it an unmitigated success. They all fill premium positions that the Longhorns can’t fill by going the transfer route. Simmons plays edge rusher, Black is a cornerback, and Baker plays offensive tackle – three positions that require the immediate contributions of a high school athlete.
Quarterback Quinn Ewers and receivers Xavier Worthy, Isaiah Neyor, and AD Mitchell all joined the team through the transfer portal. While these additions are important, the Longhorns need the premier players of Simmons, Black, and Baker to round out the class, and secure the future of Texas football.
The remaining recruitment of these three players could prove to be the defining moments of the Longhorns’ 2024 class. The decisions of Simmons, Black, and Baker will ultimately make or break the success of the class, and set the tone for the following year.
Texas’ current 2024 class has potential, and almost became the all-star cornerback group of the Longhorns’ dreams. With the three essential recruits yet to make their decisions, the Longhorns have a chance to turn the tide and become a force to be reckoned with. Win out or fail – this will be the deciding factor in how the 2024 class is viewed in the eyes of the Texas football fans
