The skyrocketing price of petroleum products is a major source of distress for Nigerians. Ahmad Bashir, a media aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari, recently shared his views on the impact of the increasing costs of petrol, saying it would lead to “untold hardship and suffering” for Nigerians.

The current petrol price of N617 shows that the fuel price has increased significantly since it was declared an end to fuel subsidies upon President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration, rising from N195 to N540. Despite the President offering $10 monthly for six months to 12 million households, the offer was met with negative reactions from Nigerians who saw it as being too meagre to alleviate the economic effects of the rising petrol prices.

Mele Kyari, managing director of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL), highlights that the rising fuel prices are due to market realities. However, Mr Ahmad expressed his hope that the increase would be beneficial in the future. He urged Nigerians to “pray to the Almighty God that the increase will be beneficial to all and Nigeria in general”.

It remains to be seen what effects the increasing cost of petrol will have on Nigerian households, and what solutions the government may be looking into to help families cope.
