Kalvin Phillips Decides to Stay at Manchester City Despite Transfer Interest
When Kalvin Phillips was signed from Leeds United by Manchester City last summer, he was expected to make an immediate impact on the team. But sadly, it was not meant to be. Phillips was held back by various injuries and when he finally returned to the team, he was not in top shape and was called out by his manager, Pep Guardiola, for returning from the World Cup ‘overweight’.
This led to West Ham and other teams taking an interest in Phillips as he struggled to get any game time. He had a disappointing season and his future at City was uncertain. But in recent news, he has decided to stay and fight for minutes at City rather than go anywhere else. This has made Guardiola happy as he welcomed the decision.
Juanma Lillo gave Phillips his first minutes of the season off the bench against Fulham, and then the England international was also given a start for England against Scotland during the international break. Guardiola is pleased with his performance and happy that Phillips has stayed at the club.
The competition at the Etihad has been fierce this season with Bernardo Silva staying and Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes coming in. But despite this, Guardiola is welcoming to Phillips and is hoping to be able to count on him moving forward.
The positives from this situation is that Phillips knew competition was high and could have left but instead, he decided to stay and fight for his place rather than take the easy road out. He is a great example of how competition can bring out the best in athletes and with this new found form, Phillips could be an asset to City this season. All that’s left to do is wait and see
