The Represenative of Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Okpolupm Etteh, has urged Federal and State Governments to increase their efforts in the fight against viral Hepatitis. Hon. Etteh, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, expressed this plea during commemoration of the 2023 World Hepatitis Day.

The theme of this year’s World Hepatitis Day is “We Are Not Waiting”, and Hon. Etteh rightfully emphasizes that action is needed to make the fight against Hepatitis effective. Communities must be empowered with priority for prevention campaigns and public awareness. Through this, Federal and State Ministries of Health, Information and National Orientation Agency must make sure drugs are available in all Primary Health Centres to combat the virus in Nigeria.

Hon. Etteh noted with concern that millions of Nigerians are living with Viral Hepatitis and its burden is tremendous on families and healthcare systems. Viral hepatitis knows no boundaries, with the virus affecting individuals of any age, gender, or socio-economic status. Thus, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the virus must be facilitated.

On this World Hepatitis Day, Hon. Etteh has called for heightened public awareness and action. He has also encouraged Nigerians to know their hepatitis status and to spread the word about treatment for the virus. Awareness is a key weapon in the fight against viral hepatitis, and anyone can take action to make a difference
