Korea reported record exports of lip cosmetics in the first seven months of 2021. According to the Korea Customs Service (KCS) on Monday, the export value of lip cosmetics, such as lipsticks, lip tints, lip balms, and lip glosses, was US$198 million, a 63.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This net shipment of 23 million lipsticks was shipped to a total of 125 countries.

The country with the largest share of the exports was the United States, accounting for 42.2 percent of total exports. Next in line was Japan, with 15.1 percent of the exports, followed by China (9.5 percent), Vietnam (7.8 percent), and France (3.9 percent). The KCS states the sudden boom in the export sales are due to the popularization of Korean cosmetics, which are perceived as being stylish and excellent value for money, and increased demand as masks can now be removed in many public spaces.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, lips and makeup have been one of the main ways of self-expression as people continue to adjust to the new regular of wearing masks and social distancing. Whether it’s a subtle hint of color on the lips or a full glam makeup look, women are returning to their favorite beauty products and maximizing the visibility of their faces.

This sudden growth in lip cosmetics export clearly shows the power of beauty and how it can inspire people’s self-expression during unprecedented times. With makeup being an essential tool that women desire to look and feel their best, the demand for quality and affordable lip products only continues to rise, and Korea certainly seems to have met that
