Recently, a Kenyan Roman Catholic priest, Lawrence Muvengi, was granted $800,000 bail after appearing in the St Catherine Parish Court, charged with numerous sexual offenses involving a 12-year-old schoolgirl. As a condition of his bail, Muvengi is not to be seen in St Catherine Parish, with the exception of court appearances. The court also ruled that he must report to the Matilda Corner Police Station three times per week, surrender his travel documents, and a stop order has been issued to all ports of entry nationally.

Lawrence Muvengi is charged with having sexual intercourse with a person under 16 years, sexual touching of a child, grievous sexual assault, and abduction of a child less than 16 years. Allegedly, the priest befriended the girl and lured her to his home where he then allegedly assaulted her. The incident was reported on June 23, 2023, three months after it had allegedly taken place on March 19, 2023. After a positive identification of the priest on an identification parade, a question-and-answer interview was conducted with the suspect in the presence of his attorney.

Though many of the details of this case are still unclear, what is very clear is the enormity of this case. It is heartbreaking to see such levels of distress and travesty occur here in Jamaica. The safety of our children should be at the utmost of our priority list.
