Is Dr Pepper A Coke Or Pepsi Product? Here’s the Answer
Everyone knows about the iconic soft drink, Dr. Pepper. It has an unmistakable flavor that sets it apart from every other soft drink. People often wonder whether Dr. Pepper belongs to one or the other soda giants, Coke or Pepsi. Read on to learn all about Dr. Pepper, its history, and its affiliation with either of the two brands.
What is Dr. Pepper?
Dr. Pepper was invented in 1885 by Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas, and sold at a drug store soda fountain. This amazing soft drink quickly gained popularity in other parts of the US, and for good reason. It has its own unique flavor that people love, and also has various other flavors like vanilla, cherry, lemon, etc. The recipe for the drink remains a secret and there are more than 20 flavor variations.
Dr. Pepper’s History
The name of Dr. Pepper came from Charles’ boss, Wade Morrison, who named it after a friend of his, Dr. Charles T. Pepper. It was initially sold as a tonic before it was introduced as a soft drink in 1903. People during that time even claimed that it had multiple health benefits such as mental clarity and digestion improvement.
In 1919, the Coca-Cola Company assumed the ownership of the drink, and maintained the recipe and the 23 flavors. Then in 1986, the owners of the brand, Cadbury Schweppes, ended up creating the separate company, the Dr Pepper Snapple Group. This initiated the independent brand-status that it enjoys today.
Is Dr. Pepper a Coke or Pepsi Product?
Dr Pepper Snapple Group is the official producer and distributor of the drink. And the 7th largest beverage company in the US has more than 25,000 people employed and has over 100 different centers of distribution. When people see the bulk bottles of Dr Pepper at the Pepsi and Coca-Cola company, they get confused and wonder whether Dr Pepper is a Coke or Pepsi product.
Dr Pepper is not affiliated with either of the companies. Both Pepsi and Coca-Cola have international rights to distribute it but are not the official owners.
How did Dr. Pepper Become Associated with Coke and Pepsi?
In the 1900s, both the companies were seeking to expand their businesses. This is when Pepsi and Coca-Cola agreed to bottle the popular drink together. They signed an agreement in 1923, and ever since then both of them have enjoyed the rights to distribute Dr. Pepper.
In 1965, The Coca-Cola Company merged with Fanta, and then in 1986 the joint venture of PepsiCo and Coca-Cola created Cadbury Schweppes. This dissolved in 2008 and PepsiCo had Tropicana join them. Dr Pepper Snapple Group now claims the brand.
Ultimately, Dr Pepper is an independent brand, and owned by Keurig Dr Pepper. Both PepsiCo and Coca-Cola have bottling and distribution rights for the drink. People are often confused when they see Dr Pepper included among Pepsi and Coca-Cola company products, but the answer to the query, “Is Dr Pepper a Coke product or Pepsi product?”, is neither.
