Whistleblower Akil Abdullah Alleges Attack From Gunmen

Akil Abdullah, the whistleblower in the ongoing police investigation involving Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, has alleged that gunmen tried to kill him on Sunday night. In a recent telephone interview with Express, Abdullah stated that if he had not managed to escape through nearby bushes, he would have certainly been dead. Claiming to have reported the attack to police, Abdullah mentioned that he was now in hiding and trusted no one, as he fears for his life.

This account of attempted murder that Abdullah has provided comes shortly after Augustine revealed a series of videos Abdullah allegedly secretly recorded in which he confesses to being part of a plot to destroy and embarrass Augustine and his administration. During his statement, Augustine revealed that Abdullah was allegedly offered money to bring down the chief secretary to the tune of $270,000, of which Abdullah claimed to have received $70,000. Prime Minister Keith Rowley, PNM Tobago Council leader Ancil Dennis, Senior Counsel Gilbert Peterson and Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher have all denied the allegations, but the confirmation of the attempted attack remains to be seen.

When pressed for further comment, Abdullah stated that he did not want to speak more on the incident due to the active investigation by Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS). He noted that during this heated time, it’s difficult to trust anyone, especially police, as too many reports of potential whistleblowers have gone without consequence, with those persons often ending up dead. Abdullah even went as far as to say that in T&T, life doesn’t seem to be respected or kept sacred.

Whether the attempted attack on Abdullah was directly related to his claims made against Augustine, remains to be seen. We’ll have to wait and see whether the investigation into the allegations is able to find any more information on this matter
