The Discharge Certificate Controversy: A Review of the DSS vs NYSC Allegations
The 2023 Enugu gubernatorial election has been fraught with controversy as two major parties, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party, face off over the alleged forgery of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate by current Governor Peter Mbah. The Department of State Services (DSS) recently released a report that counters the allegations of the NYSC and suggests that the certificates in question were validly issued.
In the Statement on Oath from the DSS representative, Mr. Yahaya Isa Mohammed, at the ongoing Enugu State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, revealed that the NYSC had misplaced Mbah’s original file and opened a temporary one for him. It was also found that certificates in Mbah’s series were issued to other corps members in Lagos, contrary to the NYSC’s claims.
The Labour Party (LP) quickly countered the report and questioned its authenticity due to its lack of a letterhead and stamps from the DSS. During cross examination, Mr. Mohammed answered that his signature sufficed and he appeared in court due to the subpoena. He also did not provide any documents to back up his statement, claiming these documents were in his office.
Further questioning into whether Mbah had been Chief of staff to the former Enugu State governor during the period in which he was meant to serve as a corps member revealed that it was not within Mohammed’s purview to investigate this matter.
It appears that the controversy and allegations surrounding Mbah’s certificate of service will not be resolved anytime soon. Upon conclusion of the ongoing petition, we will be sure to see further developments in the story. It then us to continue to stay up to date on the case and it’s progress towards resolution
