As tensions between Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu continue to increase, Senator Adams Oshiomhole has recently addressed the possibility of Shaibu’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Shaibu has alleged his executive responsibilities have been hindered by Obaseki, but the Governor has denied any intentions to impeach his deputy.
In response to this conflict, Oshiomhole has urged Shaibu to respect his superiors and reminded him that the APC should not be viewed as a refuge for the disgruntled. He also urged the parties involved to set aside their differences for the sake of the larger Nigerian government.
“The political parties, even the rates of decamping and recamping shows that the only thing that is constant is Nigeria and not the political parties” he said. “It is my wish that this government and even future governments regardless of the political parties, govern in peace.”
He further made clear that the APC is “satisfied the way [they] are” and that they “are happy in opposition and [they] are not about to receive people who are coming because they have lost out.”
The ongoing dispute between the Governor and Deputy Governor is yet another example of the infighting among Nigerian political parties. However, in the midst of the rising tensions, Oshiomhole has attempted to appease both sides by reasserting the need to prioritize the nation’s governing body and abide by the common goals of achieving peaceful and collaborative governance in Nigeria. It remains to be seen how the situation will ultimately resolve itself, but the Senator’s words of advice will no doubt provide valuable guidance for both parties involved
