The US Open is well under way and the competition is heating up. Earlier today, we saw Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev defeat Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(8-6) to make it to the round of 16. With the victory, Medvedev continued his US Open success following his championship win in 2021.

The match came shortly after Medvedev’s finish in the early hours of his previous match against Chris O’Connell, a factor he noted saying it was “tough”. Medvedev’s next challenge comes in the form of Australian 13th seed Alex de Minaur who defeated Chile’s Nicolas Jarry 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 44 minutes.

Also making it to the round of 16 was German Alexander Zverev following his three-set to one victory against Grigor Dimitrov. Zverev lost the first set 6-7 but managed to take the next three sets 7-6, 6-1, 6-1 to advance. His round of 16 opponent is Italian sixth seed Jannik Sinner, who knocked out former champion Stan Wawrinka in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win.

Russia’s Andrey Rublev also secured his last-16 spot defeating French Arthur Rinderknech 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5. He will go on to face Britain’s Jack Draper who became the only remaining Briton in the singles after Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans were eliminated.

Altogether, the competition at the US Open is proving to be a thrilling experience as we move closer to the finals. With committed showings from the players, the matches are sure to be full of action. From Medvedev’s rise to the championship in 2021 to Dover’s emergence as the only remaining Briton in singles, we are already in for a treat that’s sure to go down to the wire
